Calling out Philadelphia's preservation crisis in our so-called "World Heritage City."
Michael Bixler is raising money to support saving the Columbus Square Pavilion, which is currently under immediate threat of being demolished by the Philadelphia Department of Parks and Recreation. It was opened in 1960 and designed by the firm of Gabriel Roth and Elizabeth Fleisher, Philadelphia's first licensed female architect. The pavilion is one of the city’s last surviving examples of Googie architecture. It has obvious adaptive reuse potential and, because of its small footprint, would fit easily into the renovation master plan for Columbus Square, an historic public park in South Philadelphia. Bixler would like to see this endearing civic building put back into public service.
Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
Docomomo US celebrates Giving Tuesday through the "Doco Games," an epic tournament of modernism featuring Docomomo superfans who battle it out to support the modern places they love.
